Photoshop Channels & Masks
with Deke McClelland
Masking is the art of creating detailed, organic selection outlines for the purpose of generating photorealistic layered compositions and precisely directed image enhancements. And masking is what this pre-conference seminar is about. Excerpted from Deke's 20-hour tour-de-force video series (www.lynda.com/deke), this half-day intensive covers masking from A(lpha channels) to Z(iv), with a smattering of everything between. Topics include the Color Range command, the quick mask mode, alpha channels, LZW compression, selection tricks, blend modes, luminance blending, layer masks, knockouts, luminance and density masks, blue screening, and Calculations (a.k.a. channel operations). Along the way, we'll mask highlights, shadows, hair, fabric, glass, flame, smoke, and even a goldfish. Whether you're new to masking or you want to "raise your game," this session will elevate your idea of what a mask is and what can be done with it. (Materials for this class will be provided on a CD by the instructor.)

Believing is Seeing - How to Shoot In A Real World Setting NEW!
with Vincent Versace
There is an artistic voice that is unique to each individual. A way of seeing the world that so moves us that we are compelled to photograph it for others to see. This class is about not looking but about seeing. It is a class about creating images that when viewed we believe we were there to feel what the photographer felt when he was taken by the picture. In this class we will explore the boundaries of light, pattern, geometry, gesture, emotion, color and most importantly time and how to incorporate these elements in the images we create. The focus of this class is to learn not how to take photographs but rather how to be taken by them. This class is not one that will just explore how to take technically perfect, compositionally correct, average photographs of an extraordinary subjects, but rather how to create extraordinary photographs of the world we see through the lens from the smallest things we walk by everyday and the average things we take for granted. This class is about how to see past the obvious.

Every File Has 10 Channels, Part 1 NEW!
with Dan Margulis
This advanced course concentrates on practical applications of channel operations--blends and masks--that take advantage of the characteristics of certain channels--even when the channel is in a file that's not in the same colorspace as the file being worked on. Someone working in RGB, for example, may find that a copy of the black of CMYK, or the B of LAB, can solve otherwise difficult problems.
Starting with generalized descriptions of how each of the ten available channels is formed, the sessions move quickly to real-world examples of how they are used. Attendees need to be familiar with the Apply Image command, how to load and modify a layer mask, and how to save, load and modify alpha channels.
